What you need

Just as the previous tutorial, we’re going to use Liquid Fusion as a binding agent.

For this tutorial, we will be needing needle nose pliers (or any kind of skinny, thin pliers); cutter and something called Sikerukun Clay which will be used as the vinyl donor.

Sukerukun is a transparent, plastic clay usually used for miniature clay food. It’s kind of pricey and available only in a few specialty stores. So far, the best place to find them is at Etsy.

I honestly don’t know what Sukerukun is really made out of but it does dry into a plastic type material very similar to the soft plastic MH doll heads are made with. It’s essentially waterproof once it dries.

You can mix in some paint with the clay while it’s soft to match with the doll’s skin color so it doesn’t need painting later on. Form the clay into a thin sheet to match the hole created by removing the hard cap from the head. You can trace the hard cap’s shape over it to get a more accurate shape.

Plug that hole!

We will be using a Puma boy for this example. He’s will be transformed into Andy Beast.

Squeeze the head until the soft vinyl gives way from the hard cap.

In some cases, you’ll be fortunate that the plastics will just separate with minimal effort.

Use pliers to help pry the hard cap off.

If the soft vinyl is still sticking to the hard cap, use a cutter to gently separate them. Do not cut all the way through.

This is the ideal result: hard cap free!

Once you have the hard cap off, trace the shape on your Sukerukun clay so that it matches with the CAM head hole. For visibility, I didn’t color the clay for this tutorial. Use some Liquid Fusion to attach Sukerukun or cover any cracks.

Presto! You can now reroot your CAM heads with your preferred reroot method. This one used the reroot tool method.

I’m currently working on this beautiful Tonner girl, a first for me. She will soon be joining her fellow sisters Skull Spectra and Scary Skelita.

Here’s what she initially looked like before she was wiped.

Since this was my first time working on Tonner dolls, I looked up how to disassemble them. At first, both the body and the head feel like they’re made out of the same material but the head feels like a stiffer, high quality vinyl that gave way under hot water. The body feels a lot like ABS. I don’t really know how to disassemble the body so it ended up with what you see above.

I wanted a smooth transition between the skin and the skeleton view. I erased the parts that were going to be bones.

Further definition by sketching out what to do with watercolor pencils!

Meanwhile, below is the result of the Dragon tattoo I was working on for practice.

It was actually kind of weird transitioning from tiny little bodies up to 1/4 scale.

Tiny brushes works extremely well but I may need to use regular brushes for Ms. Tonner.

I-I’m sure Cleo won’t mind…

First up was an attempt at getting realistic looking colored lashes! When you look at real life colored lashes, you can still see a hint of the darker colored natural lashes. This would have probably looked a lot better if I had just simplified it to just have the colored lash look and ignore the natural lashes all together. Unfortunately due to Lagoona’s pale skin tone, the pink just didn’t stand out enough to make it look right.

It bothered me too much so I just went ahead and darkened her lashes leaving a hint of the colored lashes around the corners. She really needed those dark lashes to contrast with her overall pale color scheme.

Second doll on the table is a spare Skull Shores Frankie who is getting a full body tattoo of a dragon. It really helps to have tiny brushes to get all those details. I see so many mistakes! I hope they get covered up once it’s colored in. 

The tattoo wraps around her torso all the way to her right thigh. If I’m crazy enough, I’m thinking of just adding more tattoos later on…

The one in the middle is a normal Bratz doll I used as reference. The challenge was not just achieving a flat, printed look but actually making it look like a Bratz doll. This was my first time working with a Bratz doll so I used the watercolor pencil outline method to try and get the features as accurate as possible.

I used an AP WG Insane Detail Brush to trace the outlines.

The eyebrows were particularly hard to get right. Thankfully with the outline method, you can just wash the watercolor pencil part off and start over!

I had to thin out my paints to a milky mixture using a combination of medium, flow aid and water. Even though the mixture starts out looking like a wash, multiple applications eventually give you a flat, smooth look just like factory default.

I probably should have done the blush first but this being my first time working with Bratz, I wanted to see what she looked like so the blush was applied exactly where they were.

I didn’t want to smear the blush so this layer was later sealed with MSC and repainted.

Well, you can still sorta tell that it’s hand painted… =3

I used a method on a 2nd girl with better results. Using Pearl EX to get the shiny sheen is still something I need to get used to. Even though you can’t see the brush strokes, you can see uneven swaths of the pearl sheen that don’t really show up until after the paint has dried completely.

Also available is “Golem.” She’s sort of a scrapped project in an attempt to convert Ghoulia into a Golem of sorts.

You can pick up Golem over here. She’s using the head from my Rei Ayanami custom. Her body has been painted with crack effects and glow in the dark details, same as what was done for Enigma.

First, make sure you seal the body with a sealant. For this example, MSC was used. Use watercolor pencils to sketch out the design. No need to make it too detailed and try to use colors that the finished tattoo will be using.

Once you have sketched out your tattoo design with watercolor pencils, paint it over with acrylic paint.

The watercolor pencils still leave chalky, rough sections. If a rough, chalky look is what you’re going for, stop right here and seal your work. If not, wait for the acrylic paint to dry completely and very carefully wash the body. The watercolors should wash off leaving the painted areas intact.

You’re still going to have some rough patches after washing the watercolor pencils off so just go over uneven patches and repaint them as needed.

Once you’re happy with the design, seal your work again and you’re done!
